How to Choose a UV Lamp for Resin Crafts

Power matters more than brand

Most hobby UV resins cure with a 36W lamp. A 48W lamp cures faster and is better for thicker domes; 6W or 12W nail lamps are too weak for anything larger than a small pendant.

Wavelength

Resin cures best at 365nm and 395nm. Many lamps mix both. If your resin stays tacky after two minutes, the wavelength or the distance is usually the reason.

Lamp styles

  • Dome lamp: best for 3D pieces and multiple angles.
  • Flat panel: good for coasters and flat domes.
  • Flashlight: useful for spot curing and reaching inside molds.

Distance and time

Keep the piece 2 to 4 inches from the lamp. Cure in 60-second passes rather than one long blast, rotating the piece between passes so shadows do not leave sticky spots.

Safety

Do not look directly into a UV lamp. Wear glasses if you cure often, and keep the lamp away from children and pets.

Frequently asked questions

Will sunlight cure UV resin?

Slowly, yes. Direct sun works in 10 to 30 minutes depending on the resin.

Can I use a nail lamp?

For small jewelry, yes. For coasters and larger pieces, it is too weak.

Why is my resin still sticky?

Under-cured. Try closer distance, longer time, or check the resin's wavelength.
